If you love tacos, you’ll love everything about this easy taco dip recipe! My 7 layer taco dip with meat has SO many layers of goodness just begging to be scooped up. We’ve got taco meat. We’ve got a creamy taco sour cream and cream cheese layer. And then we’ve got ALL the toppings. The hardest part? Deciding what to dip into it!
Just like my 7 layer salad, this dip may look like a showstopper, but it’s surprisingly easy to whip up. My family swears it’s the best taco dip recipe. I often make it for parties, as you can easily make it ahead of time (just like cold crab dip or creamy French onion dip). It never fails to impress! It has meaty layers like my taco casserole, but gets dished up cold as an easy and healthy appetizer.
Why You’ll Love This Taco Dip Recipe
- Packed with Mexican flavors
- Fresh, light, and flavorful toppings
- Easy to make ahead
- Ready in less than 30 minutes
- Naturally healthy, low carb, and gluten-free
- Perfect for parties or game day!

Ingredients & Substitutions
This section explains how to choose the best ingredients for taco dip, what each one does in the recipe, and substitution options. For measurements, see the recipe card below.
Meat Layer:
The base layer for taco dip is simply taco meat, the same kind I use for taco salad:
- Ground Meat – I used ground beef, but you could also use pressure cooker shredded chicken, ground pork, ground turkey, or Mexican chorizo for this recipe.
- Taco Seasoning – I like to make my own homemade taco seasoning. It takes just 5 minutes and is made with simple pantry staples: chili powder, cumin, salt, pepper, smoked paprika, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne. But a store-bought packet of taco seasoning works as well.
Cream Cheese Layer:
I make this taco dip with cream cheese, sour cream, and a dash of taco seasoning for spice:
- Plain Cream Cheese – Be sure your cream cheese is soft, at room temperature. Otherwise, it won’t mix smoothly with the sour cream.
- Sour Cream – Instead of sour cream, you can also use mayo (with a small splash of white vinegar or apple cider vinegar for tang), or plain Greek yogurt.
- Taco Seasoning
Toppings:
You can customize the toppings to your liking, but here are the most classic options, along with alternatives:
- Iceberg Lettuce – You can also try swapping out traditional shredded lettuce for a leafy alternative like shredded kale, cabbage (or even taco slaw!), or spinach.
- Cheddar Cheese – You could use Monterey Jack cheese, pepper jack, mozzarella, Mexican cheese blend, or any shredded cheese you prefer. Use pre-shredded to save time.
- Bell Pepper – Use green, red, orange, or even roasted red peppers if you have some on hand.
- Roma Tomato – You could also dice up cherry or grape tomatoes instead.
- Onion – I used a red onion, but you could use white onions, yellow onions, or shallots.
- Black Olives – Try green olives for a bit more tang.
- Cilantro – If you aren’t a fan of cilantro, you can omit it, or try parsley, chives, or green onions.

How To Make Taco Dip
This section shows how to make 7 layer taco dip with meat, with step-by-step photos and details about the technique, to help you visualize it. For full instructions, including amounts and temperatures, see the recipe card below.
- Cook the taco meat. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the beef, breaking apart with a spatula, until browned. Add the water and taco seasoning. Stir fry until the extra water evaporates and taco meat forms. Set aside.
- Combine sour cream and cream cheese. Beat sour cream and cream cheese in a large bowl with a hand mixer. Beat in taco seasoning.

- Layer the taco dip. Spread beef in a single layer in an 8×8 square glass casserole dish. Drop dollops of sour cream mixture over the beef and gently spread with a spatula. Top with lettuce, shredded cheese, bell peppers, red onions, tomatoes, and black olives, in that order.

Taco Dip Variations
This 7 layer taco dip is totally customizable, so feel free to add your favorite condiments or toppings! Here are some ideas:
- Add condiments – Try fresh homemade salsa or creamy guacamole.
- Make a bean layer – Need a dip with beans? Add one 16-ounce can (drained) of refried beans, black beans, or pinto beans, or mix them in with your ground beef layer.
- Go meatless – Alternatively, you could make this taco layer dip vegetarian friendly by using a mixture of beans and corn as the base layer and omitting the meat altogether.
Storage Instructions
- Store: Cover the casserole dish with plastic wrap and aluminum foil keep in the fridge for up to a week.
- Meal prep: Make the taco meat, mix together the cream cheese and sour cream layer, and assemble together. But, wait to add the veggie toppings until you are ready to serve it.
- Freeze: Freezing taco dip is not recommended, as the consistency of the ingredients will change.

What To Serve With Taco Dip Recipes
I personally love to add some more veggies in when I can, so I love to scoop up this layer dip with bell pepper strips. But really, there’s no wrong way to eat it. Here are some ideas:
- Chips – Potato chips or corn chips are the traditional choice for dipping, but you could make your own almond flour tortilla chips for a low carb option. This dip also works well with air fryer zucchini chips or crispy cheese crisps.
- Crackers – Crackers might be slightly unconventional when it comes to taco dip, but they work! Try flax crackers for a lighter option.
- Veggies – Serve with celery sticks, carrots, broccoli, bell peppers (shown in pictures), or cucumber slices.

These cheesy and creamy dips will become the star at any party — and they come together so fast!
Recommended Tools
- Large Skillet – Deep walls and a multi-functional shape make it perfect for frying, baking, sautéing, searing and more.
- Hand Mixer – Not only does this mixer make mixing the cream cheese sour cream layer easy, but it takes up very little storage space in my kitchen. Major win.
- Casserole Dish – I suggest using a clear dish for this layered taco dip recipe so that you can see each and every layer. This one is the perfect size.

0Great recipe. I use Hilo nacho chips 3 g carbs per bag. I got these on Amazon. Very good and they come in different flavors.
Jeanne Cormier
0Yummy. Only had Greek yogurt so used that instead of sour cream. Left out tomato and bell pepper because I didn’t have them. Everything else done the same. And it was amazing
Louise
0If you double this recipe would a 13×9 pan work?
Wholesome Yum D
0Hi Louise, Yes, that should work.
Aletha
0Such a delicious appetizer and so easy to make! My family ate it all up in no time! Next time, I’m going to make my own keto tortilla chips so I can enjoy more of it! Thanks, Maya, for your wonderful recipes!
Shanea Wilson
0I made this for supper tonight, it was delicious. I made tortilla chips out of low carb tortillas and my husband and I both loved it, will make again.
Suzanne
0Love this! I think I’ll have this at least every couple of weeks, so good! Thank you <3
Carol
0Another winner in my book. I made this for dinner and used bell peppers as chips like pictured. SO yummy! My husband was a bit skeptical until he tasted it, and then he couldn’t stop talking about how good it was! He can be a tough critic, so if he likes something, you know it’s good.
Kristyn
0Oh, yeah!! This is my kind of dip! It will be the perfect super bowl appetizer!!

0Oh yum! I love a layered taco dip. Sometimes I add tiny shrimps too. I never thought about scooping it up with anything other than chips but I love how you have used peppers here.

Rozella Roberts
0I absolutely love this recipe. It is so easy to make. I will defiantly be making this again.
Kim
0Another excellent recipe! The taco seasoning is WAY better than any store-bought (and “cleaner”). I made 1/3 of it without the red pepper, onion, & olives (somewhat picky teenager), but all of toppings for the rest of us. I served mine over more lettuce, hubby had pork rinds with his, & the teen had tortilla chips. A winner all around! Thanks, Maya!
Kathleen
0Your comment gave me several serving options, that is very helpful!!! Thank you!!!
Sandra
0A bit surprised that this has meat in it. Also wonder if the crackers that are on this site will work as a “dipper” for this recipe.
What goes well with this for dippers?
Sandra W.
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Sandra, Yes! I have several cracker recipes on the site that will all work great for dipping in this recipe. Other alternatives would include pork rinds, sweet bell peppers, cucumbers, and celery.
Mary D
0Could you add salsa as a layer?
Wholesome Yum M
0Hi Mary, Sure! It will change the final carb count, so be aware of that.
Shay
0Amazing dip! Even my non keto friends loved this! Big hit at our July 4th party!
Lynda Luna
0I’m a little confused. You mentioned above the recipe that you add avocados or guacamole to this dip, but then it’s not in the ingredients list. If I was to add guacamole or jus avocados, which layer would be best for it?
Maya | Wholesome Yum
0Hi Lynda, Sorry about the confusion! There are no avocados or guacamole in the recipe, but you can top with some diced avocado if you like, or you can add an additional layer with guacamole above or below the sour cream layer.
Nancy
0You could also use pork rinds with this dip.
Jenni
0I made this last week and it was perfect! Such an easy recipe to follow and it turned out exactly like the pictures. It tasted amazing, too! My family loved it and asked me to make it again!
Linda
0Oh yum! I know I won’t be able to scoop this dip in one bite. So, bring all the chips out and let’s have a party!
Whitney
0Wow this is so good! I had never thought to add meat to taco dip before, I don’t think I’ll ever go back!
Fiorenza

Sandra
0LOVE this recipe! I am not a bean fan and every other taco dip I see throws in beans. There’s no beans in tacos. Anyway, I look forward to more of your bean-free recipes. 🙂
Andrea Metlika
0This is a fantastic family friendly recipe. I really like that you can switch it up for those following a keto diet and for those who are not.

0This has become one of my go-to low carb lunches!! I can make a big casserole dish of this, scoop some out in the morning and be on my way. Come lunchtime, it’s fiesta time every day!

0Yummmm! All of my favorite things in one easy dip! This is a crowd-pleaser for sure…thanks for sharing 🙂
Felipe
0I use black soy beans, for beans in my 7 layer dip, they taste just like regular beans and only 3 grams of carbs per can.
Sim
0Oh how fantastic! I am so glad I stumbled across this recipe! Cheesy loaded nachos was always a treat dish of mine before Keto but this recipe will certainly fill that hole, especially over winter! Thank you! Sim x
